Instinctive Reading: Chu, Fang-Yi Solo Exhibition

Introduction
The crux of reading images lies not so much in our understanding of their implications as in our instinctive poetic imagination about them.

In addition to being a professional contemporary artist and a member of UNESCO International Academy of Ceramics (IAC), Fang-Yi Chu teaches as a lecturer in the Department of Material Arts and Design, Tainan National University of the Arts. He was the first-prize winner of the 2008 Taiwan Ceramics Biennale, one of the four most prestigious ceramics biennales in the world, and was nominated for the International Ceramics Competition Mino, Japan in the same year. He also won the Special Jury Award of the World Ceramic Biennale Korea in 2011, and has been successively bestowed or nominated for numerous art prizes such as Taipei Arts Awards and Kaohsiung Arts Awards with his creative series of multifaceted object installations constantly displayed in domestic and international exhibitions.

Based on the observations on his quotidian existence, cultural ideology, and the zeitgeist of his times, the artist adopts the form of sculpture-like object installation to address the issues concerning the blurred boundaries between memories and dreams, between originals and simulacra, as well as the instinctive imagination about images.

This exhibition revolves around human beings’ instinctive reading about images. Human recognition of images dawned long time ago, and human beings have utilized images as the media for communication since remote antiquity. The blood of recognizing, interpreting and imagining images has run in human bodies all along the human history. Corporeal sensations are produced by the interlinkage between sentiments and circumstances, while instinctive reading “grows” from individuals’ innermost feelings and the physical conditions of living beings. On a more specific basis, instinctive reading is the result of transformation from physical instinctive drive into mind-based interpretation, and individuals’ corporeal experiences such as senses, consciousness and emotions make such kind of interpretation possible.

Accordingly, human beings have possessed the abilities to read and imagine images, only to find that images’ presentation forms and raisons d’être have been subjected to social norms and regulations. The scope of people’s understanding about images is ergo getting narrower as a mere formality due to such a restriction, which has rendered people impotent to feel visceral thrills and find associations in images. By virtue of reading images, the artist expects to make the viewers aware of the reading instinct lying dormant in the human body.

The Kalos Gallery is deeply honored to collaborate with Fang-Yi Chu, a contemporary artist par excellence, on his latest solo exhibition Instinctive Reading. We cordially invite all devoted art buffs to this elaborately organized exhibition scheduled to be on view from 3 June to 1 July 2017.
