李澤藩(1907-1989)為新竹鼎富盛名的重要藝術家,除了潛心繪畫創作之外,同時也致力於美術教育工作,1921年他進入臺北師範學校(現國立臺北教育大學)就讀,師事日本水彩畫家石川欽一郎(1871-1945),於1926年畢業後返鄉新竹,先後任教於新竹第一公學校(現新竹國小)、省立新竹師範學校(現國立清華大學南大校區)、臺灣省立師範大學(現國立臺灣師範大學)、國立藝術專科學校(現國立臺灣藝術大學)等校,作育無數英才,於美育知識傳承的用心與貢獻影響深遠,堪稱一代美術教育家。

李澤藩於臺北師範學校就學期間,便跟隨石川欽一郎四處寫生,畢業後返回新竹,仍經常擔任石川的在地嚮導,透過隨筆式的紀錄描繪各地風景特色與風土人情,畫風深具樸實、抒情的英式水彩意象。經過多年沉澱與累積,開始以濃重色彩發展極具代表性的個人特色,形式上也轉為更清晰且明確的成熟構圖,並融入生活題材於創作中,爾後更獨創「水洗」及「重疊色層」等繪畫技法。

本展精選李澤藩歷年來含括鄉野情趣、名勝古蹟、歷史節點與日常場景等多件繪畫,藉由他以畫筆在新竹所留下的深刻足跡,展現藝術與生活合一的平實和真性情,而在土地、人情及生命的感懷之外,也能探見他關注於空間表現、造型輪廓的完整性,並且揉合傳統與現代的不同技法運用。

在美術教育領域,李澤藩始終為從做中學的教育實踐者,畢業後直至1944年間皆任教於新竹第一公學校,當時的教學制度多採用一位老師帶領一個班級的形式,因此除美術科目外,李澤藩亦教授其他學科。基於本身對繪畫與教育的熱愛,他構思許多方式來提高學生對美術的興趣,如鼓勵學生用畫筆來表達文章意境,或是藉欣賞來培養審美力與擴張視野。為激發學生的學習動機與推廣美術教育,在物資缺乏且經濟拮据的時代下,李澤藩仍以自身才能設計出各式教材教具,除運用於自身課程,當時他亦自行印製、發放予臺灣各所學校,只為能將此資源廣泛運用於學習,其中一項教材便是「摺紙」。

李澤藩1952年編著「剪貼剪摺創作指導掛圖」教材,共設計30種姿勢各異的動物摺紙,僅需剪刀與紙張、不須黏貼便能完成,用於培養學生的思考與手作能力,從中也能感受他對於立體轉折、曲線弧度設計的細膩巧思。本展《摺學樂園》展區中,邀集李澤藩過往曾任教的新竹師專(現更名為國立清華大學藝術與造形設計學系)師生共同參與,將他所設計的摺紙教材結合立體雕塑形式放大演繹,讓各種動物彷若樂園般展現在美術館,不僅象徵美育知識的傳承與延續,也呼應新竹市立動物園重新開園及兒童節氛圍。此外展覽也規劃《摺學趣》互動創作區,邀請觀眾共同體驗李澤藩所設計的摺紙,從過程中發現創作樂趣,並學習美術與空間的邏輯思考概念。

LEE Tze Fan (1907-1989) is a renowned artist in Hsinchu. Not only is he dedicated to painting, but he also devoted himself to art education. In 1921, he entered Taipei Normal School (now National Taipei University of Education) and was taught by a Japanese watercolor painter named Ishikawa Kinichiro (1871-1945). After graduating in 1926, LEE returned to his hometown, Hsinchu, and taught at Hsinchu Elementary School, National Tsing Hua University, National Taiwan Normal University, National Taiwan University of Arts and others. With his lifelong endeavor and contribution to arts and education, LEE created a legacy no one can compare.

During the time at Taipei Normal School, LEE Tze Fan regularly went sketching with his teacher Ishikawa Kinichiro. Even after he returned to Hsinchu after graduation, he was still occasionally a local guide for Ishikawa. LEE’s painting style was very simple and emotional, and in his work, he depicted landscapes and the people of Taiwan. After years of experience, he began to develop highly representative characteristics with strong colors in his paintings and made them become clearer in composition, even more, created his own technique in painting.

This exhibition included paintings regarding rural life, historic sites, and daily life, it presented LEE’s truly mind about art and life. Besides his feeling about our land, relationship and life, we can also notice his technique that combined tradition and modernity.

In the field of art education, LEE Tze Fan has always been an educator. During the period at Hsinchu First Public School from 1926 to 1944, LEE not only taught art but also other subjects because of the teaching system. Based on his passion for painting and education, he conceived many ways to increase students' interest in art, such as encouraging students to use brushes to express their conception of writings and expanding students’ horizons in aesthetic through appreciating other paintings. In order to stimulate the motivations of students to learn and promote art education, LEE designed various types of teaching materials with his own talent despite the economic depression at the time. In addition to using the teaching materials in his own courses, he also printed and distributed them to lots of schools in Taiwan, including the technique Origami.

LEE Tze Fan edited a teaching material called “How to Make Paper Animals by Cutting, Sticking and Folding” in 1952, he designed 30 kinds of animal origami with different poses, which can be completed with only scissors and paper. It was used to cultivate students’ thoughts and hand-making abilities, we can also feel his exquisite thinking through the paper animals’ curves. In addition, the venue “The Origami Paradise of LEE Tze Fan” cooperated with the Department of Arts and Design at NTHU, combined the Origami teaching material and sculpture, and made the venue become an Origami paradise. It not only symbolized the continuity of art education, but also echoed the reopening of Hsinchu Zoo and the atmospheres of Children’s Day. This exhibition also planned an interactive area called “Happiness in Origami”, where we invited people to learn the conception between art and space through Origami.
