黃明川 HUANG Mingchuan
Film Director, Head of Formosa Filmedia co., Artistic Director of Chiayi International Art Documentary Film Festival
1955年生。後赴美國紐約藝術聯盟主修石版畫以及美國洛杉磯藝術中心學院主修美術、攝影。1985年發表寫〈台灣攝影史簡論〉，涵蓋清、日兩個時代，係臺灣有史以來的第一篇攝影史。
1989年起倡導獨立製片，至1999年完成三部劇情長片《西部來的人》、《寶島大夢》及《破輪胎》，先後獲夏威夷、新加坡、金馬獎影展的最佳攝影獎、銀銀幕獎及評審團獎項。釜山國際影展與香港獨立影展均擧辦過他三部劇情片的回顧。
2003年藝術紀錄片《解放前衛》共14集，榮獲第一屆台新銀行文化藝術基金會「視覺藝術獎」年度首獎。五年間來回紐約與台灣，拍攝台裔行爲藝術家，完成《肉身搏天》紀錄片，2018獲英國南罕普頓國際影展最佳紀錄片獎。
黃明川亦於2014年為他的出生地嘉義市建立了亞洲第一個《國際藝術紀錄影展》至今。
Born in Chiayi in 1955, HUANG Mingchuan left Taiwan to study lithographic printmaking at the Art Students League of New York, later on he majored in fine arts and photography at the Art Center College of Design in L.A. His first feature film “The Man from Island West” claimed an Excellent Cinematography Award at Hawaii International Film Festival and the Silver Screen Award at Singapore International Film Festival in 1990. Thereafter in 1998 his third feature “Flat Tyre” was awarded Best Film of Noncommercial Category at Taipei Film Festival, and the Jury Award of the Golden Horse Festival, Taiwan. Pusan International Film Festival and Hong Kong Independent Film Festival both programed his three features.
As a documentary director, HUANG also made numerous documentaries on art and literature subjects. His most renowned TV project under the title of “Avant-Garde Liberation” on 14 contemporary conceptual artists won the first Taishin Arts Award’s Visual Arts Prize by an international jury in 2003. HUANG’s “Chin Chih Yang - Face The Earth” won Best Documentary Award of 2018 Southampton International Film Festival.
HUANG advocated a new type of documentary festival called “ Chiayi International Art Doc Film Festival” in 2014, promoting documentaries relating to all arts including visual art, theatre, literature, architecture, design and urbanism. This was the first of its kind in Taiwan as well as in Asia.
