Illustrated Treatise Of Folks
“Mang (茻) – grass,” which is a variant form a Chinese character Mang(莽), meaning tufted grass. The word also signifies thickness, abundance, the folk or countryside.
The change of the sense of contemporary body and the way of seeing things has been evolving the sense of body and living experiences into product and trace generated by constantly repeated labor. In this case, illustrated treatise does not merely indicate the expression of illustrated language, but in the meantime reflects and shares another path for perceiving space and behavior of daily lives leading by contemporary people. The path, on the other hand, appears incomplete, fragmental and like self-mumbling. The works try to depict views in Tainan city through simple and easily expressible illustration so as to relieve potentially personal oppression and seek the state of self. The artists leave clues through splashing paint, expecting deeper inducement.
Shu-Kai Lin was born and bred in Tainan. He got his bachelor’s and master’s degree in Taipei and continued art creation in Tainan. Yu-Ting Yen has been living in Tainan since she moved from Taipei two years ago. In the exhibition, we may notice that both artists have distinctive objects in their works. The city space illustrated by Shu-Kai Lin and the concise observation on people by Yu-Ting Yen become interesting comparison and provide effective reference for piling up the city landscape of Tainan in brain. The interpretation of the word “茻” (mang) shows the characteristics of illustration –chaos, disorder, simplification and easiness. Therefore, in the process of art creation, illustrated treatise stands for the record and the formulation in seizing illustrated language, inserting easier rhythm in originally solemn “illustrated treatise.” Faintly discernable connection and conversation are within illustrations, presented by an incomplete and imaginary image. The feature captures the details of daily life in Tainan, bringing their own irresponsible writing and delineation into daily situation, city and space around people.
